MISSION OF SCCPPA
The SCCPPA is a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization, formed to bring about improved health and quality of life among all people in SC by encouraging and facilitating increased participation in regular physical activity. We hope to unite the efforts of organizations, businesses, schools, and individuals who are concerned with promoting physical activity and health in all population in our state.

- We serve as a vehicle for communicating, advocating, and networking for the purpose of promoting physical activity in SC.
- How do we do it?
- We advocate for policies that support physical activity at the individual and community level.
- We facilitate the dissemination of health and physical activity information that promotes an understanding of the benefits of physical activity to the individual and community and the knowledge of how to be more physically active.
- We provide a networking infrastructure for individuals, professionals, organizations, and agencies that are invested in promoting physical activity.
GOALS OF SCCPPA
- To improve health and quality of life among all South Carolinians
- To increase South Carolinian's participation in regular physical activity
OBJECTIVES
We will focus on 3 levels of objectives: policy objectives, program and communication objectives and organizational and networking objectives. For each objective, there are suggested actions that coalition committees could take to meet the respective objective. The action steps should be adjusted by each committee as needed.
Policy Objective
- Increase awareness among state-level decision makers of the cost of physical inactivity and of state policies that impact physical activity in SC.
- Serve on Governor's Council
- Co-host legislative breakfast to discuss the burden of physical inactivity
- Establish a communication relationship with one key policy maker at the state level
- Create policy recommendation document for 1 priority issue we can advocate for over the next 2 years
- Create media advocacy messages (e.g. letters to the editor, letters to legislators) that support targeted policy change
Program/Communication Objectives (2)
- Increase state level recognition of the importance of physical activity promotion in South Carolina.
- Expand Walk to School Day reach (# of schools participating) and media exposure
- Increase participation in and media exposure of Annual Physical Activity Conference
- Increase distribution of SCCPPA (electronic) newsletter
- Increase distribution of SCCPPA communication mediums (website, newsletter) to organizations targeting minority populations, youth & schools, and aging populations
- Highlight state & national model programs of physical activity promotion via SCCPPA communication channels
- Have a membership presence on state-level(DHEC) initiatives impacted by physical activity: diabetes initiatives, CVD initiatives, obesity initiatives
- Facilitate the dissemination of health/physical activity information that promotes an understanding of the benefits of physical activity and the knowledge of how to be more physically active (at individual and community levels)
- Identify and obtain communication materials for dissemination to 3 mass media outlets (radio, TV, newspaper) for 3 communities chosen as a pilot/test site.( Radio PSA's, TV highlights of events, human interest stories & letters to the editor in the local/state newspaper).
- Create Press Kit for SCCPPA to make available to local/state media.
- Identify health reporters in TV and newspaper media in SC.
- Feature important PA links on the SCCPPA website.
- Promote the website through communication promotions such as magnets, t-shirts, or related give-away items.
Organizational/Networking Objectives (4)
- Achieve state level recognition of the SCCPPA as a leader of physical activity promotion and advocacy in South Carolina
- Expand media exposure for Walk to School Day
- Increase participation in and media exposure of Annual Physical Activity Conference
- Increase distribution of SCCPPA (electronic) newsletter
- Increase distribution of SCCPPA communication mediums (website, newsletter) to organizations targeting minority populations, youth & schools, and aging populations
- Highlight model programs of physical activity promotion via SCCPPA communication channels
- Have a membership presence on state-level(DHEC) initiatives impacted by physical activity: diabetes initiatives, CVD initiatives, obesity initiatives
- Establish an organizational brand identity
- Survey current members and solicit input about our brand (e.g. contest describing brand)
- Conduct Delphi survey of other state PA coalitions.
- Increase membership at the individual and organizational level.
- Attend 5 state-wide physical activity events to promote brand visibility and recruit members
- Identify 10 new channels to disseminate coalition membership information
- Establish community level coalition groups around the state
- Select 5 communities ready to establish local coalitions
- Select 5 communities to research existing physical activity coalitions / initiatives / advocacy groups
